When I heard that they were remaking Evil Dead, I scoffed just like the rest of you. Everyone knows you shouldn’t try to remake a beloved cult classic, and nobody could replace Bruce Campbell as our loveable hero Ash. So I went into this movie thinking “here we go again to destroy part of my childhood”. Wow, was I wrong. Those of you familiar with the original have got to go into this movie not comparing it to the original. The remake of Evil Dead does not pretend to be something it is not. It is not so much a remake, but a revision. It has the same general plot with a couple of different interpretations. We start with a drug abuser, Mia (Jane Levy) and her brother David (Shiloh Fernandez) and their group of friends trying to help Mia kick her drug addiction in their old family cabin. When they go searching for a bad smell in the basement, they stumble upon the book of the dead. When a couple of lines are read from the book, the gore fest begins.
I would not classify this movie as scary. There are a couple of jump moments but nothing overly terrifying. It is however, the gore fest that some people choose to complain about. I’ll admit there were moments when even I had to look away. Evil Dead is gory and Intense and all around fun to watch. I am happy they didn’t try to outdo the original because it wasn’t going to happen. This is one of the best remakes I have seen in a long time. So, if you go into watching this movie not trying to compare it to the original, and enjoy it for the blood and gore fest it is, you’ll have a great time watching it.
BTW: MAKE SURE TO WATCH THE CREDITS!
