Get all the details about the FREE comics and other Halloween treats you can score at the only comic book store owned by a haunter this Saturday during Halloween ComicFest!
Fifteen years ago the North American comic book industry launched Free Comic Book Day to introduce new readers to the joys of reading comics, call back former comic book readers and thank current buyers for their continued support. This event takes place annually on the first Saturday in May.
In 2012, Diamond Distributors created Halloween ComicFest to serve the same purpose in the fall on the last Saturday before Halloween, only this time the free comics and events surrounding the fest would be themed to the orange and black holiday!
Louisville has several fine comic book stores and pop culture emporiums, but only one of them is owned by someone in the Halloween business. Earlier this year, Kevin Stich, owner/operator of the notorious Haunted Hotel on S 4th Street, opened Heroes Comics & Gaming at 361 Baxter Avenue in the Highlands, and this Saturday Stich’s comic book store is hosting its first Halloween ComicFest in true haunter style.
Besides the FREE comics (I’ll get to those in just a minute), kids can trick-or-treat and get free candy and participate in a costume contest. There will be one costume contest for kids and one for adults. There will also be a store wide Halloween ComicFest sale with everything in store being 25% off and a large selection of $1 comics. Vintage toys and board games will be 40% off and Funko Pops will all be buy-two-get-one-free.
There will be 19 different full size comics and 13 mini comics to choose from that are completely FREE. To see a complete list and previews for each individual comic, hop on over to the official Halloween ComicFest website at http://www.halloweencomicfest.com/Catalog. Here are some of my favorites this year:
The Phantom’s Phavorites (Full Size Comics)
The Haunted Mansion #1: Marvel Comics takes on Disney’s classic dark ride, The Haunted Mansion, in the first issue of this Disney Kingdoms spooky adventure. I’ve been obsessed with The Haunted Mansion my whole life so this comic is the top “must have” treasure of the entire lot!
Evil Dead 2 #1 Beyond Dead by Dawn: Ash must battle the evil dead in the French Quarter in New Orleans while searching for a Voodoo Priestess!
Harrow County #1: Emmy always knew that the deep, dark woods surrounding her home crawled with ghosts, goblins, and zombies. But on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, she learns that she is connected to these creatures-and to the land itself-in a way she never imagined.
Scooby Apocalypse: What is Halloween without a little Scooby Doo? Plus a preview of a new series of comics that pair Hanna-Barbera properties you know and love with the best creators in comics, taking them to fresh and unexpected places.
Three Stooges Halloween Hullaballoo #1: Larry, Moe and Curly are back in an all new Halloween adventure!
Spidey #1: Marvel introduces a new, original Spider-man series during Halloween ComicFest that takes readers back to Peter Parker’s younger years in classic Marvel style!
The Phantom’s Phavorites (Mini Comics)
John Carpenter’s Tales for a Halloween Night “The Traveler’s Tale”: A short campfire style story from horror master and “Halloween” director, John Carpenter!
Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas Manga: A sampling of the Japanese manga adaption of Tim Burton’s holiday classic.
Grumpy Cat Halloween Special: Grumpy Cat is unimpressed with Halloween, but his brother Pokey loves it. They get into holiday antics, but who cares? Grumpy Cat wears a Jason hockey mask. How can you not want to see that?
